Ring in the new year: Privacy and security tips and strategies for 2015

As the new year kicks off, many opt to make resolutions for the months ahead. HCPro’s Briefings on HIPAA newsletter asked some privacy and security professionals to share their best tips for a productive 2015. What advice would they offer others in the industry to ensure the year ahead is a success? Here are some ideas they were willing to share:
  • Focus on information security. Covered entities (CE) and business associates should focus on changing their information security perspective in 2015. Don't look at it as a compliance issue, but rather a cost of doing business, says Chris Apgar, CISSP, president of Apgar & Associates, LLC, in Portland, Oregon.
  • Implement multifactor authentication. As healthcare organizations rely more heavily on remote access to systems, their need for multifactor authentication increases. "Even though organizational password standards are improving, passwords have inherent security limitations," says Kate Borten, CISSP, CISM, founder of The Marblehead Group in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Rather than permitting static, user-chosen passwords, make an effort to strengthen authentication this year by requiring two-factor token and PIN solutions for system access, says Borten.
