Of the more than 300 individuals who responded to a recent Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (ACDIS) website poll, most CDI professionals seem to be taking advantage of advice from the American Hospital Association’s Coding Clinic for ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS. The poll asked “How often do you refer to Coding Clinic for coding guidance?” to which 54% said “a few times per week.” Overall only 18% indicated they rarely (if at all) look to the quarterly publication for advice.
Although Coding Clinic may not always be the definitive source for documentation and coding advice (there is a hierarchy of importance as to which coding guidelines and recommendations take precedence) the four Cooperating Parties deem it the official publication for coding guidelines and advice, Cheryl Ericson, MS, RN, CCDS, CDIP, CDI Education Director for HCPro in Danvers, Massachusetts, explained during the August webinar “Coding Clinic for CDI: Targeting new opportunities for program growth.”
Since the publication holds such weight within the industry, savvy CDI programs review each edition with an eye for new documentation improvement opportunities and any perceived changes in documentation or coding needs.
ACDIS members have access to regular Coding Clinic analysis in each edition of the CDI Journal.
