"Aha moments" for HIM professionals

Perhaps it's because I reside in Chicago—home of both Oprah Winfrey and the American Health Information Management Association—but lately I have been thinking about "aha moments" for HIM professionals. Maybe this is because after many years of being in the industry, it's easier to recognize cyclical workplace and technology trends. Regardless of when we first recognize these trends and cycles, we as HIM professionals must be cognizant of our environment and the factors that influence our day-to-day situations. Doing so may provide a deeper understanding of the reasoning and impact of our decisions.
 
There are many adages that can ring true for HIM professionals when their aha moments strike or when they're looking for a bit of inspiration. Consider the following.
 
When you are an HIM professional, your investment in your own career determines your destiny and level of success. Yes, you have to be in the right place at the right time, but promotions don't occur by accident. Success comes with hard work, long hours, performing tasks that are sometimes tedious, and above all making a commitment to be a lifelong learner. Participate in continuing education through reading, trade shows, webinars, or formal courses to keep your mind fresh, explore new ideas, and reduce the anxiety associated with changes in the HIM landscape.
 
Volunteerism is another way to invest—and in return you receive the gifts of new friends, insights into subjects previously unexplored, and the wonderful feeling that comes from accomplishing something as a team. Volunteer opportunities can range from mentoring students to serving on a committee or in an elected position. Volunteerism can offer many intangible rewards—it's a natural form of networking that can help you step out of your comfort zone, open new doors, and take on new challenges, especially in the technical arena as EHRs continue to advance. Your next opportunity may come from the volunteer role you take on tomorrow.
