OCR representatives confirmed during a panel at the 2014 AHIMA Convention and Exhibit September 30 that the agency still plans to move ahead with phase 2 HIPAA audits.

A delay with the portal used for submitting audit data pushed the audits out. During the panel at the AHIMA Convention, OCR’s Geraldine Davis, Yun-kyung Lee, and Eric Press remained tight-lipped about when the next round of audits will begin, but said it may be as soon as late 2014 or early 2015. The panel said that OCR is working to update the portal to make it easier for organizations to submit documentation requested during the audits.

OCR has begun its process of randomly selecting covered entities (CE) for the next round of audits, but has not sent notifications to facilities yet, said Davis, senior health information privacy specialist for OCR. At minimum, it will include large and small hospitals, dental practices, health insurance companies, and health plans in its pool of organizations that may be selected for an audit. Business associate audits will begin after CE audits are underway.
