Taking charge of information governance

HIM professionals must be flexible and willing to adapt to the ever-changing healthcare environment. Most people in HIM departments across the nation are focused on the emergence of EHR technology and what will happen with ICD-10, and rightly so. But the key to developing the policies and procedures that will help make any HIM initiative successful is health information governance.
 
"Information governance for healthcare is more important than ever before because of the rapidly changing clinical and technological advances along with the dynamic legislative and regulatory activities within the healthcare ecosystem," says Meryl Bloomrosen, MBA, RHIA, FAHIMA, vice president of thought leadership, practice excellence, and public policy at AHIMA.
 
This is why AHIMA is calling for an HIM makeover in which HIM professionals embrace the changes in healthcare and further efforts towards establishing best practices and standards across the care continuum. "There are several converging interpretations and definitions for terms such as information and data governance for healthcare," Bloomrosen says.
