On Monday, March 31, the U.S. Senate approved a temporary “fix” to the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR). Tucked into the bill was one sentence that effectively delayed implementation of ICD-10-CM/PCS until 2015. It states:

The Secretary of Health and Human Services may not, prior to October 1, 2015, adopt ICD–10 code sets  as the standard for code sets under section 1173(c) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 1320d–2(c)) and section 162.1002 of title 45, Code of Federal Regulations.

The news has since circulated throughout the healthcare media. I and several other association and industry representatives joined for a special program on the delay during a recent Talk Ten Tuesday, where nearly every speaker encouraged listeners to “stay the course” and continue on with their ICD-10-CM/PCS implementation preparations—we encourage you to do the same. (Listen to a podcast of the discussion.)

According to a special report on ICD-10 preparedness 12% of survey respondents received no information to raise their awareness of ICD-10-CM/PCS documentation improvement needs, as of January. Only 68% said they received training on the code set, and 32% indicated their CDI staff assists with ICD-10-related education for physicians. (Download the free White Paper.)

After the big news about the ICD-10 delay, you may be wondering what it means for the 7th Annual ACDIS Conference. Perhaps you may even be debating whether it’s still worth coming to Vegas at all.

If so, I urge you to think again. As Elvis (patron saint of Las Vegas) might have said, “We can't build our dreams on suspicious minds.”

To address the uncertainty, we’ve added a new session on Wednesday, May 7 (Day 1 of the conference) titled, “ICD-10 delay… what’s next?”

Attendees can join Gloryanne Bryant, RHIA, CDIP, CCS, CCDS, AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer, national director of coding quality, education, systems, and support for Kaiser Permanente (KP)–National Revenue Cycle in Oakland, Calif., Cheryl Ericson, RN, MS, CCDS, CDIP, AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer, CDI education director for HCPro in Danvers, Mass, and Claude “Trey” La Charité, MD, physician advisor for clinical documentation integrity and coding at the University of Tennessee Medical Center for this special one-hour session to get the latest news and guidance. This session will cover:

  • What happened? An insiders’ look at the delay
  • ICD-10 advocacy and support
  • Immediate next steps for your CDI department and others
  • Provider engagement, education, and messaging during the delay
  • Advancing your education and implementation timelines
  • Q&A

Of course we have a complete track of ICD-10 training as well as tracks for new initiatives in CDI, program management, physician education and engagement, quality improvement, and documentation and coding—dozens of sessions and a host of networking opportunities to meet your CDI team’s educational needs.

See you in Vegas! #ACDIS2014 #Vegasbaby!
