According to a recent ACDIS poll, productivity truly runs the gamut:

  • 33% review 1-10 records per day
  • 34% review 11-15 records per day
  • 16% review 16-20 records per day
  • 9% review 21-25 records per day
  • 4% review 26-30 records per day
  • 3% review more than 30 records per day

For those reviewing APR-DRG payers, productivity is significantly less, with 42% of poll respondents indicating they only review six to eight records per day (see the poll http://tinyurl.com/mf6epxa).

"The productivity requirements of 20 charts per day (recommended by some in the industry) is difficult to meet especially since we implemented a new software program and other measures,” wrote one respondent to the forthcoming 2014 productivity survey. “The administrators want us to eventually review 30 charts per day but whipping through the charts does not necessarily mean that there will be a greater impact. It takes time to carefully review the charts in order for the reviews to be of any value.”

A 2010 ACDIS survey showed most CDI programs requiring between eight to 12 new reviews per day per staff member, and 12–20 re-reviews daily.  Phase 1 of the CDI Roadmap materials contains a White Paper regarding variables affecting productivity and an example document of how one CDI department determined its productivity expectations.

Editor’s Note: Complete analysis of the “2014 CDI Program Structure and Productivity Survey” is forthcoming in the CDI Journal section of the ACDIS website.
