The number of codes in ICD-10-CM can be overwhelming. ICD-9-CM contains just 32 total codes for fractures of the femur, while ICD-10-CM includes 48 possible codes for reporting fractures of an unspecified part of the neck of the femur (S72.0-) alone.
However, many of the additions simply relate to laterality, as fractures can be coded to the right leg, the left leg, or an unspecified leg in ICD-10-CM. The other possibilities largely result because of the specificity available in ICD-10-CM for reporting different fracture classifications and encounter types (initial, subsequent, or sequela).
