Many of the code changes in the 2014 CPT® Manual Radiology section focused on deleting procedures now represented by the growing number of combination codes.
CPT code 72040 (radiologic examination, spine, cervical; 2 or 3 views) was revised from "3 views or less" since another code exists for only one view (72020).
The AMA deleted code 75960 (transcatheter introduction of intravascular stent[s] [except coronary, carotid, vertebral, iliac, and lower extremity artery], percutaneous and/or open, radiological supervision and interpretation, each vessel) as part of its push toward more combination codes. Because 75960 appeared with endovascular revascularization procedures (37205-37208) approximately 75% of the time it was reported, it's now included in the new therapeutic service codes for transcatheter placement of stents (37236-37239).
The AMA similarly deleted codes 77031 (stereotactic guidance for breast procedures) and 77032 (mammographic guidance for breast procedures) and included the services in the new comprehensive codes for breast biopsies (19081, 19281, 19283).
This tip is adapted from “AMA updates CPT codes for new technology and drugs in 2014” in the March issue of Briefings on APCs.
