The AMA included or revised the parenthetical notes following a number of CPT® codes for image guidance.

Percutaneous drainage (CPT code 75989) should not be reported with thoracocentesis procedures (32554, 32555, 32556, 32557, and 47490).

The parenthetical note under code 76942 (ultrasound guidance) was updated to include new codes for tube thoracostomy, thoracentesis, pleural drainage, and paravertebral joint injections.

Code 77003 (fluoroscopic guidance) should not be reported in conjunction with any pre-sacral spinal fusion procedures.

The parenthetical note under codes 77011 and 77012 (CT guidance) restricts the use of these two codes in conjunction with any pre-sacral spinal fusion procedures. In addition, the note prohibits use of code 77012 with thoracocentesis.

The exclusionary parenthetical for code 77021 (MRI) has been revised to restrict use with thoracocentesis and pleural effusion drainage.

The tip is adapted from “AMA revises, deletes radiology codes for 2013” in the April Briefings on APCs.
