CMS added two codes to the list of primary procedures reportable with add-on code 33225 (insertion of pacing electrode, cardiac venous system, for left ventricular pacing, at time of insertion of pacing cardioverter-defibrillator or pacemaker pulse generator [including upgrade to dual chamber system]).

Those new base codes are:
  •     33222, revision or relocation of skin pocket for pacemaker
  •     33223, revision or relocation of skin pocket for cardioverter-defibrillator
In addition, CMS will apply edit 84 if new psychiatric add-on codes are submitted without a code for the primary service on the same day.

Five base codes and 256 add-on codes will now hit edit 84 if they are not coded properly, Fee says.

The add-on codes in OCE work basically the same way as add-on codes in CPT, but not all of them may be classified as add-on codes in the CPT Manual

The tip is adapted from “CMS adds significant number of new codes” in the March Briefings on APCs
