New CPT® codes are now available to report the provision of a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Each code reports a specific approach used by the physician.

For a TAVR with prosthetic valve using a percutaneous femoral artery approach, coders will report 33361. If the provider uses an open femoral artery approach, report 33362. When the provider chooses an open axillary artery approach, use code 33363. If the physician uses an open iliac artery approach, report code 33364. For a transaortic approach (e.g., median sternotomy, mediastinotomy), use code 33365.

If the provider implants a catheter-delivered prosthetic aortic heart valve, open thoracic approach (e.g., transapical, or other than transaortic), coders will report CPT category III code 0318T.

The tip is adapted from “New codes for cardiology procedures added to manual” in the February Briefings on APCs.
