Congratulations to this week’s winner Christine Martin, CPC, senior coder in Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the University of Kentucky. Chris correctly answered this question (even though the actual correct answer was not included among the choices):

What is the correct ICD-9-CM code for a crushing injury of the lower leg?
a.   928.01
b.   928.11
c.   928.11
d.   928.20
The correct answer is 928.10.
Here’s a little bit about Chris:
What are your current job responsibilities?
I do outpatient coding for the University of Kentucky Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. Almost everything I do is related to outpatient/clinic visits. I actually do very little inpatient coding at present.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in health information management?
Like so many of us, “it just happened.” I started out in healthcare more than 30 years ago because I needed a job – anywhere –  and since then have done just about everything non-clinical. I worked  for Blue Cross as a fraud/overutilization analyst, managed a private practice for 11 years, coordinated a work injury program at a hospital, managed the orthopaedics call center at the university, and now I am a coder. I got my certification back in 1998 when I was managing the private practice and am glad to finally get a chance to really use it.
What do you like most about your job?
I am pretty detail-oriented and I like pulling together all the pieces necessary to submit a compliant claim.
What is your favorite area of coding?
I really like E&M, believe it or not.
What is your least favorite area of coding?
Surgery – mainly because I don’t get to code it much and often feel less than sure of the right codes to use. I hope to remedy that in the future.
What are some of your hobbies?
Reading, my many cats, dogs and other pets, and of course, my six perfect and gorgeous grandchildren.
Do you have a personal motto that you live by?
The Golden Rule can’t be beat – I try to remember to dignify others every day by treating them the way I would like to be treated. Sometimes that can be a challenge!
