b. 38571
c. 38572
d. 38589
Answer: C

Here’s a little bit about Charles:
What are your current job responsibilities?
I work at Springield Hospital, which is in Springfield, Pa. The hospital is a 30-bed facility, which is part of Crozer-Keystone Heath System. Currently I perform coding and abstracting for inpatient and outpatient records, specifically ambulatory surgery, endoscopies, and observation cases, with concurrent review of some inpatient cases. I also review and track cases for the tumor registrar at Crozer Chester Medical Center.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in health information management?
Originally I based my decision on a Career Guidance Survey I took at Community College of Philadelphia. (A long time ago in a galaxy far away...it seems!) As I've gone on in my chosen field, it has grown on me. I love to read, I have always been fascinated by the medical field, and it’s been a natural fit for me. I have had many wonderful mentors as well, which have always been a source of support and inspiration.

What do you like most about your job?
My favorite part of my job is coding, especially with ICD-10 coming soon, it is always challenging and fascinating to me.

What is your favorite area of coding?
My favorites are ambulatory surgery and endoscopy coding. I love drilling down to the details, seeing exactly what was done to take care of patients’ ailments from cataracts and fractures to carpal tunnel syndrome.

What is your least favorite area of coding?
I’d have to say is writing physician queries is my least favorite thing, and that's from getting used to not writing in a leading fashion. With the advent of EMR, this is not as bad.

What are some of your hobbies?
My hobbies include gardening. I also love to walk and hike and a good book will stop me in my tracks.

Do you have a personal motto that you live by?
From my grandparents: “There is never a dull moment!”
