Q: We continue to have problems with our claims hanging up in the edits when we report CPT® code 33249 (insertion or replacement of permanent pacing cardioverter-defibrillator system with transvenous lead(s), single or dual chamber) for the cardioverter-defibrillator and HCPCS code C1882 (cardioverter-defibrillator, other than single or dual chamber [implantable]) for the lead. Is there any word on when CMS will resolve this problem?
A: CMS is reinstating HCPCS code C1882 as an acceptable device to be reported with CPT 33249 as part of July 1 I/OCE update. The change will be retroactive to January 1, 2012. See Transmittal 2483.
Editor’s note: Andrea Clark, RHIA, CCS, CPCH, chairman, CEO, and founder of Health Revenue Assurance Associates, Inc., in Plantation, FL, answered this question.
