Stage 2 Meaningful Use requirements: What you need to know

If your hospital doesn't plan to take advantage of government financial incentives for those who become "meaningful users" of EHRs, it is in the minority. According to HHS, 85% of hospitals plan to demonstrate meaningful use and earn incentives by 2015.
CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) advanced the incentive program February 24 by publishing a proposed rule for the second of three stages of EHR meaningful use. Access the rule, Medicare and Medicaid Programs; Electronic Health Record Incentive Program-Stage 2, in the March 7 Federal Register.
Providers will have to adhere to Stage 2 requirements in 2014 under the proposed rule, an extension of the original plan for compliance by 2013. The proposed rule includes new standards patients to access their health information online and electronic health information exchange (HIE) between providers.
