CMS announced March 15 that it will not enforce the January 1, 2012 HIPAA Version 5010 compliance deadline until June 30. Earlier this year CMS delayed enforcement until the end of March. This new deadline will give an additional three months to those covered entities required to comply with the HIPAA transaction standards.

Providers are encouraged to complete implementation during this time, including testing and training activities, according to a statement from CMS. More than 70% of all Medicare Part A claims and more than 90% of Part B claims are now successfully being processed in the Version 5010 format, per CMS, with commercial plans reporting similar percentages.
