An instructor’s perspective on the proposed ICD-10 delay and the need to continue training

ICD-10 Trainer, February 24, 2012

Even though this kink (the possible implementation delay) has been presented to everyone, I think we need to remember that the likelihood of continuing status quo for a lengthy amount of time using ICD-9-CM (which is not really functional any longer) is very slim. A decision to move forward with some type of updated system must be made. At this point we don’t know if the delay is a few months after October 1, 2013 (e.g. January, 1, 2014) or a year or more.

But if we continue to hold off on learning about ICD-10 until we know, that just puts us in the same boat by not taking advantage of the additional time given to us to learn and master this system. I believe the more exposure the community has to ICD-10, the more voices will be cheering on its implementation. When the decision is made about a new date, CMS accepts comments during the comment period in the rulemaking process.
