QUESTION: How would you report a percutaneous arthrocentesis of the left knee bursa in ICD-10-PCS?

ANSWER: For this procedure, you would look up the root operation “drainage” in the alphabetic index of the ICD-10-PCS Manual. Then reference “bursa and ligament” (per the ICD-10-PCS coding guidelines, the word “and” means “and/or”) and follow this to the entry for “knee”, where the index lists ICD-10-PCS code 0M9P. Incidentally, looking up “arthrocentesis” as a main term also leads to the root operation drainage.

Then if you look up ICD-10-PCS code 0M9P in the tabular index, you will find that the complete code for this procedure is 0M9P3ZZ.

Please note that the knee joint region, and tendon are considered to be different body system values in ICD-10-PCS.
