On November 15, 2011, CMS unveiled three demonstration projects aimed at reducing improper payments in the Medicare program. More than a month later on December 21, CMS held a special open door forum detailing the recovery auditor prepayment review demonstration. As comments and concerns from providers made their way to CMS, news of a delay on two of three of the demos transpired shortly thereafter.
Today, CMS announced that both the recovery auditor prepayment review and the prior authorization of power mobility devices (PMD) demonstration projects are expected to move forward on or after June 1. The prior authorization of PMDs demonstration was significantly revised as a result of provider and supplier concerns, according to CMS.
