It's 2012, and that means it's time to make some resolutions to kick off the new year.
"This next year is really going to be tough with everything else going on in the healthcare arena," says Dena Boggan, CPC, CMC, CCP, HIPAA privacy and security officer at St. Dominic Jackson (MS) Memorial Hospital.
There is certainly a lot going on, but here are some of the things privacy and security officers are resolving to accomplish.
One officer's resolution might strike a chord with many people. Brandon Ho, CIPP, HIPAA compliance specialist for the Pacific Regional Medical Command based at Tripler Medical Center in Honolulu, says his resolution is not to go crazy if a breach occurs that involves something he has warned staff about time and time again.
Ho is almost assuredly not alone in his frustration that his HIPAA compliance message isn't heard by all staff members. That message includes not accessing unauthorized patient records.
Boggan echoes the access message. "I resolve to have no staff members snooping into patient records. We are so close on this one this year," she says.
Ho's second resolution involves his concern about the growing use of social media. "I resolve to remind all of our staff that Facebook is not the place to talk about patients or show photos from work," he says.
