Coders can now access the 2012 ICD-10-CM codes online at either the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website or CMS’ ICD-10-CM and GEMS website. These changes represent the last regular update to the ICD-10-CM codes before the switch to the new coding system on October 1, 2013.

CMS posted the ICD-10-PCS files in June on the ICD-10-PCS and GEMs webpage.
The GEMs are forward and backward mappings between the ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 coding systems and are also referred to as crosswalks since they provide important information linking codes of one system with codes in the other system. Some ICD-9-CM codes have a one-to-one match with ICD-10-CM codes, while other ICD-9-CM codes may map to several ICD-10-CM codes.
