As part of the final regular update to ICD-9-CM before the transition to ICD-10-CM October 1, 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added codes to specify the stage of glaucoma.
These following five codes are completely new and require a fifth digit:
• 365.70, Glaucoma stage, unspecified
• 365.71, Mild stage glaucoma
• 365.72, Moderate stage glaucoma
• 365.73, Severe stage glaucoma
• 365.74, Indeterminate stage glaucoma
Coders may also report the following codes:
• 365.01 Open angle with borderline findings, low risk (retitled)
• 365.05 Open angle with borderline findings, high risk (new)
• 365.06 Primary angle closure without glaucoma damage (new)
The CDC also added a new V code, V19.11 (family history of glaucoma).
The tip is adapted from “Final regular ICD-9-CM code update continues trend of increased specificity” in the October Briefings on APCs.
