When working toward an EHR implementation, leave plenty of time for planning the most important component of your system: your EDMS, according to Darice Grzybowski, MA, RHIA, FAHIMA, president of HIMentors, LLC. This should encompass both document imaging and HIM work flow support (e.g., release of information, coding/abstracting, Master patient index management, work queues, reporting).
By taking adequate time (six months minimum) to ensure your medical record forms are properly identified by bar-coding for indexing and queue control, you can be assured you won't have to add staff for clerical support, and your efficiency, productivity, and quality processing will improve.
Editor’s note: For additional advice, access the September issue of Medical Records Briefing.
