Coding productivity will decrease at least initially with the switch to ICD-10-CM/PCS. Coders will also need complete, accurate documentation to take advantage of the new code set's increased specificity. So HIM and coding managers need to know how productive their coders are and the extent of their clinical knowledge base, as well as how accurately and completely physicians are documenting.
Mary A. Roberts, CCS, regional coding manager, and Melissa Myrick, MSA, RHIA, regional director of HIM for BayCare Health System in Tampa Bay, FL, decided to compile this data for their organization. BayCare employs approximately 80 coders across its 12 hospitals and 20 outpatient ambulatory care centers.
"We felt that if ICD-10 was going to impact productivity, then we needed a baseline," Roberts said during the AHIMA ICD-10 Summit, held April 11-12 in Baltimore. So Roberts, Myrick, and BayCare staff worked with Karen Youmans, MPA, RHIA, CCS, president of YES HIM Consulting, Inc., in Largo, FL, to find out.
