The descriptions of diagnosis codes in ICD-10-CM may be very different than what coders have become accustomed to seeing-and likely even memorized-in ICD-9-CM, says Gloryanne Bryant, RHIA, CCS, CCDS. Bryant is the regional managing director of HIM, NCAL revenue cycle, at Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. & Hospitals in Oakland, CA. She is responsible for coding, education, and HIM operations for 21 acute care hospitals.
Part of preparing for this change includes gaining a familiarity with anatomy and physiology, which can in turn help coders ask for additional documentation that may be required to code compliantly.
