Does HIM play a role in Joint Commission survey readiness at your hospital?
During a February audio conference, "HIM and The Joint Commission: Your Role in Survey Prep and Compliance," Jean S. Clark, RHIA, CSHA, director for accreditation at Roper St. Francis Healthcare in Charleston, SC, and former president of AHIMA, asked listeners that very question.
The response? Just over half (57%) said yes.
That's good, according to Clark, but that percentage should be higher. HIM can—and should—be involved in multiple ways, including being chapter owners, conducting ongoing record reviews, being involved in data management system tracers, serving as policy experts, and being involved during the actual survey.
