Don’t forget about protecting security when moving to an EHR.
“Electronic health information systems are the nuclear energy of health reform,” says James C. Pyles, Esq., principal of Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville, PC, a Washington, DC, law firm. “They can bring great benefit if carefully used and controlled, and can be costly and produce catastrophic damage if not tightly controlled.”
Electronic health information systems make it possible, for the first time, to breach the privacy of millions of individuals at the touch of a button, Pyles says. It’s also possible to steal health information without having physical access to it—or even being on the same continent, he says.
