What kind of return can your CDI program guarantee in terms of RAC preparedness? That’s the question Lynne Spryszak, RN, CCDS, CPC-A, CDI education director for HCPro, Inc., Danvers, MA, aims to answer in her recently released White Paper “Five Ideas for Maximizing Your CDI Team Impact on RAC Preparedness.”
In 2008, when CMS announced the permanent Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program, facilities without CDI programs jumped on the CDI bandwagon, says Spryszak. Facilities soon realized the value of CDI programs in minimizing denials and recoupments through the clarification of insufficient or missing provider documentation, she says in her White Paper.
From a RAC perspective, the majority of facilities are focusing on medical necessity and one-day stays, historically the responsibility of the utilization review committee, she says. Yet it’s the documentation of the provider — not the clinical interpretation of the record — that often results in denials and recoupment, Spryszak explains in the White Paper.
