HIM directors and privacy officers should consider making the following HIPAA-related New Year’s resolutions, according to Chris Simons, RHIA, director of utilization management, HIM, and privacy officer at Spring Harbor Hospital in Westbrook, ME:
- Get out of your office more this year. You can’t know what is going on in your facility unless you monitor it. Think of ways to discover what is really going on. Consider surveying your staff or doing privacy rounds so you can be sure that the information you teach and put into policy is really being followed on a daily basis.
- Make 2011 the year you focus on education. Think of creative ways to get your message across. Screen savers, payroll inserts, and HIPAA games (believe it or not, crosswords and word searches are still popular in these days of iPhone® apps!) all help deliver your message and make it stick. The time you spend educating your work force is probably the most valuable time you spend as a privacy officer.
