Facilities need to start planning for IT obstacles that may arise during the transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM. They also need to budget for new paperwork, such as new claim forms and patient charts that reflect the increased information required for ICD-10-CM, forms that will need to be revised, and the associated training and education for the staff.
After the costs of updating hardware and software, training will be the next largest expense. Almost every member of the clinical and administrative staff in the practice or facility will need some level of ICD-10-CM training. In order to better manage the costs of the transition, providers need to begin planning for it now.
This tip was adapted from “Switch to ICD-10 will change more than just coding” in the December issue of Briefings on APCs.
