HIPAA training tip: Remember your existing workforce

Editor’s note: This is the fourth in a series of tips to help keep your staff HIPAA compliant.

Many organizations do a good job training new employees but forget about education for existing staff members, says Chris Apgar, CISSP, president of Apgar & Associates, LLC, in Portland, OR. As a best practice, all staff should receive refresher training at least annually. Apgar notes that physicians are among the worst when it comes to failing to attend training.

Provide continuous training by developing and circulating new information on an ongoing basis, says Phyllis A. Patrick, MBA, FACHE, CHC, cofounder and managing director of AP Health Care Compliance Group, which has offices in Pittsburgh and Purchase, NY.
