Editor’s note: This is the third in a series of tips to help keep your staff HIPAA-compliant.

Remember to train everyone who works with PHI, says Chris Apgar, CISSP, president of Apgar & Associates, LLC, in Portland, OR.

Your workforce includes independent contractors who act as employees (versus business associates), volunteers, and temporary staff—all of whom need education about privacy and security, says Apgar.

Develop role-based training for individuals working in risk areas, such as HIM, patient accounting, registration, and nursing, says Phyllis A. Patrick, MBA, FACHE, CHC, cofounder and managing director of AP Health Care Compliance Group, which has offices in Pittsburgh and Purchase, NY. Specific employee groups, such as managers and corporate officers, should receive specialized training in topics related to their responsibilities, she says.
