'Meaningful' reason to perform risk assessment

Healthcare organizations have a new motivation to perform risk assessments—meaningful use and incentive payments under the Medicare and Medicaid electronic health records (EHR) incentive programs.

The meaningful use regulations (42 CFR §495.6) require organizations to conduct or review a security risk analysis and implement security updates as needed, along with correcting identified security deficiencies as part of their risk management process.

CMS’ Office of E-Health Standards and Services posted “Information Request for Onsite Compliance Reviews,” which highlights areas of vulnerability associated with the security of electronic PHI, on the CMS website.
