The American Accreditation Healthcare Commission, also known as URAC, recently formed the Security Health Care Accreditation and Certification Workgroup to help organizations identify and implement best practices for information security requirements.

The group plans to review HIPAA's security rule along with various other security standards, such as CMS' Internet security requirements, and develop a common set of health care security standards that will cover policies, procedures, controls, and auditing practices.

The group's mission includes

  • Bringing together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors to facilitate communication and consensus on best practices for information security in health care
  • Promoting the implementation of a uniform approach to security practices and assessments by developing white papers and crosswalks, and participating in educational programs, as appropriate
