HIPAA Q&A: Sending PHI

Q. Must covered entities that provide PHI to hospitals send it to a specific workforce member, or may they send it to a department?
A. Covered entities may send PHI to a department (e.g., cardiology or radiology). Including a specific person’s name or position is preferable but not required.
