Congratulations to this week’s winner, Kay R. Zettler, RHIT, manager of the health information management department at Effingham Hospital in Springfield, GA. Kay was the first person to correctly answer this question:

Which ICD-9-CM procedure code should you report for the insertion of four vascular stents?

  1. 00.45
  2. 00.46
  3. 00.48
  4. 00.49

Answer: 00.48

Here’s a little bit about Kay:

What are your current job responsibilities?

I am responsible for the assembly and analysis, coding, transcription, and release of information functions.  I also have oversight for the HIM functions at three hospital-owned physician clinics and a 105-bed extended care center.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in health information management?

I hesitate to admit this, but I just kind of fell into it. I was working in the business office, and the supervisor of the medical records department left. My administrator had a lot of faith in me and offered me the position with the understanding that I would complete the (at that time) American Medical Record Association independent study program in medical record technology and become certified. I did, and the rest is history. I found my niche in HIM.

What do you like most about your job?

Every day is a new challenge.

What is your favorite area of coding?

I like inpatient coding. It is interesting to me to read through the documentation and have to put together the pieces of the puzzle.

What is your least favorite area of coding?

Long-term care coding

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy kayaking, the beach, and spending time with my children and grandchildren. I am active in my church, and I love to read.

Do you have a personal motto that you live by?

Something that Mark Twain once said, “Keep away from small people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” I pray every day that I have that kind of positive effect on the people I work with and mentor.
