Seven steps to comply with the Red Flags Rule

If you don’t have an identity theft prevention program in place, take action now. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will begin enforcing its Red Flags Rule June 1, so healthcare providers must have an identity theft prevention program to protect their patients by that date.

The focus of the Red Flags Rule is identity theft, said Rebecca Williams, RN, JD, partner and co-chair of the HIT/HIPAA Practice Group at Davis Wright Tremaine, LLP, in Seattle. Williams spoke about the Red Flags Rule February 3 at the 18th National HIPAA Summit in Washington, DC. The rule requires creditors and financial institutions to implement an identity theft protection program.
