When a first-time patient is admitted with an acute condition such as diverticulitis, and the patient says he or she has lung cancer or HIV, for example, and they leave against medical advice before we’ve had a chance to perform a work-up or obtain confirmation from the primary care physician, should we report the lung cancer or HIV?
