Q. If an outpatient has a service on September 10, September 20, October 1, and October 15, 2013, and it’s all on one bill, what happens?

A. Those can be processed based on the line item detail for date of service, but you could also take a different strategy. You could say, “Everything September 30 and prior, we’re going to keep it clean and bill all the ICD-9 services together.” Then you can bill everything after October 1 separately. You can use either of the two ways.

Editor’s note: Gloryanne Bryant, BS, RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCDS, regional managing director of HIM for Northern California Revenue Cycle at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, CA, answered this question in the May 2010 issue of Medical Records Briefing.
