OCR list discloses large patient data breaches

OCR posted on its Web site February 22 a list of covered entities (CE) that have reported breaches of unsecured PHI affecting more than 500 individuals. More than half of the 41 cases involved the theft of desktop or laptop computers or electronic portable devices. The HITECH Act requires the secretary of HHS, which oversees enforcement and compliance of the HIPAA privacy and security rules, to post a list of large patient data breaches reported to the agency.
