On March 5, CMS issued Transmittal 648 to implement processing of more ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes on institutional claims, effective January 1, 2011.

According to MedLearn Matters article MM6851, this expansion is to allow for:

  • Adding additional ICD-9 other (secondary) diagnosis codes (from eight codes to 24 codes) as well as additional associated present on admission (POA) codes
  • Adding additional ICD-9 other (secondary) procedure codes (from five codes to 24 codes)

This Transmittal concerns hospitals, home health agencies, skilled nursing facilities, and other providers who bill fiscal intermediaries, regional home health intermediaries, or Medicare administrative contractors for providing institutional services to Medicare beneficiaries.
