Tip: Charge for opened supplies for canceled procedure

Should hospitals charge for open but unused supplies when a patient is brought to the OR and anesthesia is initiated, but the procedure is cancelled?
Hospitals may charge for costs incurred in the performance of such a procedure, a CMS representative said during a Hospital Open Door Forum call. Any supplies used in the care of that patient, if opened, are legitimate charges.
