Adapt HIPAA internal sanctions policy to comply with HITECH

Providers know that HIPAA requires them, as covered entities, to impose sanctions consistently, with comparable discipline for comparable violations. 
 
The HITECH Act establishes new penalty tiers. This is why providers should revise their sanction policies now. 
 
Develop written guidance, thoroughly investigate any violations, and take a proactive approach as you revise your HIPAA internal sanctions policy to comply with new laws, says Nancy Davis, MS, RHIA, director of privacy/security at Ministry Health Care, an integrated healthcare system based in Wisconsin.
