CMS’ current national coverage determination (NCD) is fairly straightforward, specifying the indications for which it will and will not cover F-18 fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) PET. However, nothing is completely straightforward in life, and coverage for FDG PET is no exception.
“The challenge really is operationalizing this issue,” says Paula Moynihan, associate director of financial services at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. M.D. Anderson performs the most PET scans annually in the United States.
