Editor’s note: This is the fourth in a series of tips in HIPAA Weekly Advisor about preventing breaches.

Be prepared in case of a breach. Assign an individual to be responsible for organizing responses to security incidents. Appoint a core team to conduct the investigation and include representatives from:

  • IT
  • Human resources
  • Risk management
  • Legal
  • Security
  • Administrative
  • Staff members directly involved in the incident

Build your team carefully and conduct mock breaches.

This material is an excerpt from the HCPro, Inc., white paper, “HHS Breach Notification Interim Final Rule. Form Your Incident Response Team, Set Policies and Procedures to Comply with New Federal HIPAA Regulations.”
