1.5 million patient records breached

One of the nation’s largest health insurers confirmed that 1.5 million patients’ records with medical claims were included on a computer hard drive that went missing for six months, the Hartford Courant reported Thursday, Nov. 19.

The hard drive also included physician billing details including tax ID numbers.

The Shelton, CT, insurer’s external hard drive disappeared from its headquarters, the Courant reported. The hard drive had personal and medical information from as far back as 2002.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal told the Courtant, “The severity and scope of this breach is unprecedented in Connecticut, if not the country.”
