Last week’s question
W.C. Sellar and R.J. Yeatman wrote a humorous version of the history of England. What is its title?
- A History of Britain: At the Edge of the World
- Down the Thames
- Goodbye to All That
- 1066 and All That
The correct answer is D. 1066 and All That: A Memorable History of England, Comprising All the Parts You Can Remember, Including 103 Good Things, 5 Bad Kings and 2 Genuine Dates is the full title. However, it is usually referred to as 1066 and All That. Published in England in 1930, the book takes a wry look at how history was taught during that era. It remains in print.
Goodbye to All That by Robert Graves is an account of the author’s life as an officer in the trenches during World War I. A History of Britain: At the Edge of the World is an actual history written by Simon Schama. Down the Thames by Martin Andrew is a selection of archive photographs from the well known Francis Frith Collection.
