Correctly reporting modifier -59 can challenge even the experienced coder, but doing so inappropriately puts your facility at risk. Reporting this modifier incorrectly amounts to over-coding, and that’s a compliance problem. However, failure to report the modifier when cause and documentation require that you do so results in potentially lost revenue.
To prevent compliance or revenue difficulties, education on modifier -59 is critical. Learn to use the resources available to you and stay on top of changes that may affect your use of the modifier.
