A transparency amendment to the health reform bill (HR 3200) was approved September 24 by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which would require states to publicly report information on hospital charges.
The amendment would also require insurers to provide individuals with estimated out-of-pocket costs for health services, according to the American Hospital Association (AHA).
Representatives Joe Barton (R-TX), Gene Green (D-TX), Michael Burgess (R-TX), and Henry Waxman (D-CA) wrote the amendments based on a bill by Burgess and Green that builds on state-level hospital price reporting efforts and requires insurers to participate, according to the AHA.
